From December 19 to 21, the Low-carbon Energy Storage Science and Engineering (International) & Energy Storage Intersection Forum 2023 was held in the NEU International Hotel. The forum was co-sponsored by NEU, the Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Liaoning Association for Science and Technology, Shenyang Association for Science and Technology, and the Northeast Branch of China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd. Researcher Li Feng from the Institute of Metal Research and Professor Luo Wenbin from NEU acted as the executive chairs of the forum. This forum is a key academic exchange activity supported by Liaoning Association for Science and Technology and Shenyang Association for Science and Technology. With the theme of "low-carbon energy storage - efficient transformation", the forum brought together more than 600 experts and scholars from the scientific and industrial circles in the field of energy storage engineering. Nine well-known academicians at home and abroad and more than 20 national-level talents made the plenary reports and keynote reports online and offline. They showed the latest R&D progress and industrial achievements in the field of energy storage and power batteries as well as related key materials, and explored the bottlenecks and technical performance problems in the current energy storage engineering field. Tang Lixin, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Vice-president of NEU, Cheng Huiming, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and expert in materials science, Liu Gang, Director of the Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Liu Weidong, Party member of Liaoning Association for Science and Technology, Sun Xiaohui, Party Secretary of Shenyang Association for Science and Technology, Yang Chengdian, Deputy General Manager of China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd., and other experts and scholars and business representatives attended the event.
Energy storage solutions can improve the efficiency of renewable energy utilization, balance the supply and demand of energy, and enhance the stability and flexibility of the power grid. It also can solve the intermittency and unpredictability of renewable energy, adjust the power grid load, improve energy efficiency, and reduce energy waste, building a more efficient and sustainable energy system. Advanced battery technology, super-capacitors and new chemical energy storage methods will continue to drive the energy transition and provide a solid foundation for a low-carbon future, Tang Lixin said.
The essence of "carbon neutrality" is the issue of energy, climate and development. "Carbon neutrality" can help China achieve "corner overtaking" in the automotive sector. Developing and fully utilizing renewable energy is an important way to carry out energy structure transformation and realize "carbon neutrality". In terms of efficient utilization of clean renewable energy, electrochemical energy storage technology will play a key supporting role, Cheng Huiming pointed out.
As a bridge connecting traditional and sustainable energy systems, energy storage technology can effectively store such renewable energy as solar and wind energy, ensure stable supply, solve the problem of intermittency, improve the flexibility and resilience of the electric power system, and ensure energy security, Liu Gang expressed.
Liu Weidong said in his speech that the development of energy storage technology has a profound impact on the local economy, and plays a key role in scientific and technological innovation and industrial upgrading. The combination of cutting-edge academic researches and industrial needs can promote technological innovation and practical applications, and advance the development of energy storage technology towards the goal of green and sustainable development, he added.
Tang Lixin and Cheng Huiming respectively delivered a report on the topic of "Big Data Analysis and Optimization of Material Science" and "Wide Temperature Range Batteries". Centering on related topics, the present experts and scholars discussed new solutions for energy storage scientific research and application, carried out cross-industry high-end academic exchanges, and shared the latest research results, showing the way for scientific research and technological innovation in the field of energy storage.
