Recently, the list of winners of the HEP Cup” Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM) 2020 has been announced. Students of NEU at Qinhuangdao won 1 national first prize and 3 national second prizes in the contest.
The CUMCM, initiated in 1992, is an annual mass science and technology activity sponsored by the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM) for college students nationwide. It is aimed at inspiring students' enthusiasm for studying mathematics, improving students' comprehensive ability to set up mathematical models and use computer technology to solve practical problems, encouraging students to take part in extracurricular science and technology activities, expand the scope of knowledge, and cultivate creative spirit and cooperation consciousness, and promoting reforms of the systems, contents and methods of mathematics teaching in universities. The CUMCM is one of the first 19 contests included in the Ranking List of College Discipline Contests and has become the largest competition in basic disciplines among colleges and universities in China and the largest mathematical contest in modeling around the world.
NEU at Qinhuangdao has always attached great importance to the contest. Under the guidance of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, the School of Mathematics and Statistics undertook the training program to offer the experimental course of mathematical modeling training in March this year, initiating the publicity and training work for the contest. In July, the school-level qualification trails were carried out, and 62 teams were recommended to participate in the national contest. After two times of review by the Hebei Provincial Organizing Committee and the National Organizing Committee, the team composed of students Li Jiafei, Hu Zhiyu and Xu Xinyi from NEU at Qinhuangdao won the national first prize.
