Environmental Engineering in Northeastern University was set up in 1993, started to enroll students in 1994, obtained the master’s degree authorization in 2002, received the construction projects qualification of environmental impact assessment in 2004, and was approved for the national characteristic specialty construction site by the Ministry of Education in 2011. The total member of academic faculty is 19, including 5 professors, 4 associate professors, 8 lecturers and two laboratory technicians. Through the national 985 Project, 211 Project and numerous scientific research projects, water pollution treatment laboratory, air pollution control laboratory, solid-liquid separation laboratory, microbiology laboratory, environmental monitoring laboratory, industrial pollution control laboratory, and environmental impact assessment laboratory were established. In possession of several large-scale equipments of environmental detection and analysis, these laboratories can provide comprehensive supports for environmental technologies.
Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University mainly focuses on the control and engineering design of wastewater pollution, air pollution and solid waste, and emphasizes the practical applications of environmental engineering technology combined with industrial and mining companies. Through the introduction of the environmental system engineering principles, the systemic energy saving theory and technology were established; through the scientific study of coagulation sedimentation and filtration separation technologies, a series of high performance liquid separation technologies has been developed, and many achievements have been used in industrial practice; through the long-term research on the theory of dust filter, electrostatic precipitation and flue gas desulfurization and denitrification, theoretical research advantage in air pollution control has been established in the northeast area of China; through the review of traditional solid waste treatment and disposal, novel technical methods on solid waste recycling treatment using ecological principles was established. Meanwhile, the regulations of academic leaders and young talents selection in various research areas have already established. The scientific research works are remarkable: annual actual research funds exceeded 10,000,000 RMB; more than 100 items of scientific projects were undertaken, including the National Key Project of the Ministry of Education, the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Water Pollution Control and Treatment Science and Technology Major Project, the National Key Technology Support Program, etc; more than 150 scientific papers were published, including over 40 papers indexed by SCI, EI or ISTP.
