On October 5, 2023, the grand ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Computer Science and Technology program at Huazhong University of Science and Technology was held both online and offline. The event was attended by Vice Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology and President of HUST, Academician Zheng You; Lunyi Duan, former Vice Governor of Hubei Provincial People's Government and alumnus of the Class of 1973; Vice Director of the Institute of Computing Sciences of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xueqi Cheng; Kenli Li, Standing Committee member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Hunan University; Fu Xiao, Standing Committee member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications; Qingshan Liu, Standing Committee member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications; Minghua Jiang, Standing Committee member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Wuhan Textile University; Junqing Yu, Standing Committee member of the Party Committee and Vice President of HUST; leaders from domestic sister universities and departments, functional departments within the university, alumni representatives, members from the Party Committee and the administration department of the School of Computer Science and Technology, and faculty and student representatives. The conference was presided over by Hui Yi, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Computer Science and Technology, HUST.
The conference commenced with the solemn and magnificent national anthem. President Zheng You delivered a speech on behalf of HUST. He pointed out that over the course of fifty years, the Computer Science and Technology program at HUST has developed traditional advantages in the field of computer architecture and prominent features in big data storage and processing. It has cultivated nearly 30,000 outstanding talents with innovative and creative spirits, making remarkable contributions to the development of information science in our country and to the realization of scientific and technological self-reliance and self-strengthening through the efforts of HUST's computer professionals. The development of the Computer Science and Technology program is inseparable from the pioneering efforts of the older generation of computer professionals, the concerted efforts of teachers, students, and alumni, and the strong support from sister universities and various sectors of society. It embodies the deep-rooted genes of HUST's commitment to establishing and running a university on Chinese soil. President You expressed his hope that the School of Computer Science and Technology would uphold the grand vision for the nation and continue to adhere to cooperation and exchange, mutual integration and promotion, standing firm and pursuing excellence, and contribute the wisdom and strength of HUST to the realization of the Chinese dream of great national rejuvenation.
Professor Xia Yin, a representative of the departments of sister universities and the Director of the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University, expressed recognition of HUST's robust foundation and impressive capabilities in the field of computer architecture. The university's emphasis on nurturing computer hardware expertise and its collaborative approach to computer education have resulted in remarkable research accomplishments and the emergence of numerous industry front runners, scholarly talents, and exceptional professionals. Throughout the years, the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University and the School of Computer Science and Technology at HUST have fostered a deep camaraderie through longstanding cooperation. They eagerly anticipate further enhancing exchanges and collaborations between the two institutions' computer disciplines.
Alumni representative Hongjia Gong, Chairman/Director of VCANBIO Cell and Gene Engineering Co., Ltd and General Manager of Shenzhen Jiadao Valley Investment Management Co., Ltd, expressed pride in the progress and achievements of the School of Computer Science and Technology, HUST. He acknowledged the contributions and dedication of generations of teachers, leaders, and students who have poured their youth and efforts into the advancements made by the school. As an alumnus, Gong emphasized the responsibility and obligation to contribute ideas and efforts to the progress and development of the School of Computer Science and Technology.
Professor Lei Zou from Peking University, also an alumni representative, congratulated the Computer Science and Technology program on its 50th anniversary. As an educator in the field of education, he pledged to enhance himself and work alongside the teachers and mentors of the School of Computer Science and Technology, HUST. He emphasized the need to fulfill the mission outlined by General Secretary Xi Jinping, focusing on the "four orientations" for educational and research workers. He expressed his commitment to striving for the cultivation of computer professionals.
Dean Dan Feng presented a comprehensive report on the 50-year development of the Computer Science and Technology program. The report highlighted the pioneering efforts of the previous generation of computer professionals, which laid a solid foundation for the program's development. Guided by the aspirations of their predecessors and facing the strategic needs of the nation, computer professionals have united and made significant achievements in discipline development, talent cultivation, scientific research, team building, cooperation and exchange, and cultural development. The School of Computer Science and Technology will continue to uphold the spirit of unity, cooperation, virtue, and exploration, contributing its wisdom and strength to the construction of a world-class computer discipline with Chinese characteristics and striving for high-level scientific and technological self-reliance and self-strengthening.
In his speech, Hai Jin, a teacher representative, reviewed his own experiences studying and working at HUST. He acknowledged the spirit of the older generation represented by Professor Jiangling Zhang, his mentor who selflessly paved the way and tackled innovation challenges, has been deeply affecting him. As an educator, Jin emphasized that teaching and nurturing students is his duty. Furthermore, as a researcher, he stressed the importance of considering the greater good of the country, aligning with its goals, and addressing its urgent needs.
Student representative Yu Hong from the Class of 2020 expressed his privilege in witnessing the rapid development of the School during his three-years study. The achievements of the School today are the result of the collective efforts of every student from the School of Computer Science and Technology, HUST. In the future, he aspires to inherit and promote the spirit of the School, which is characterized by seizing each moment and not letting down the times. He aims to collaborate, innovate, and cultivate virtues, drawing inspiration from outstanding alumni like Hongjia Gong. After achieving success, he plans to give back to his Alma mater and contribute to the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Alumni from home and abroad also sent their best wishes for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Computer Science and Technology Discipline through video messages.
During the conference, all attendees watched the promotional video "Computing · Infinite" commemorating the 50 years of professional development in the School of Computer Science and Technology. They also enjoyed a light and shadow drama -- "Be A Resolute and Indomitable HUSTer in the Computer Field" performed by students. The conference concluded on a high note with the enthusiastic singing of the university anthem by all participants.
After the conference, a Seminar on the Discipline Development of Computer Science at HUST, an Expert Consultation Meeting on Developing Young Talents in Computer Science at HUST, and an Alumni Networking Symposium were held respectively in the C117 lecture hall, C112 conference room of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, and the 433 conference room of No.1 building in in the southern part of the campus.
