Opening Ceremony of HUST - University of Sydney Summer School Successfully Held

On the morning of July 10, the opening ceremony of 2023 "HUST - University of Sydney Summer School · Parallel Programming Hands-on Workshop" was successfully held. The opening ceremony was hosted by Professor Feng Lu from the School of Computer Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as the School). Professor Song Wu (Deputy Dean of the School), Professor Bingbing Zhou from the School of Information Technology of the University of Sydney, and Director Gang Yin from EduCoder attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. After the opening ceremony, Professor Bingbing Zhou gave the first lecture.

At the ceremony, Professor Wu Song first congratulated the summer school on behalf of the School, and expressed heartfelt thanks to the course organizers and teachers for their hard work.“ Parallel computing is one of the most outstanding and representative inventions in the field of computer science. Many real-world computing problems, such as big data analysis and artificial intelligence deep learning, cannot be solved without it. The improvement and optimization of parallel algorithms and programming rely on the indispensable parallel thinking methods and skills of computer technology and application workers. HUST attaches great importance to the construction of parallel programming courses and has set up the only "Parallel Programming Principles and Practice" course in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao.  This Summer School will be an important extension and supplement of this course, and we wish the Parallel Programming Hands on Workshop every success!” said Wu.

Afterwards, Professor Bingbing Zhou from the School of Information Technology at the University of Sydney warmly welcomed everyone to the summer school and emphasized that it is a practical course. He stressed the importance of the post-course Q&A sessions and practical assignments, and encouraged everyone to take them seriously and work hard to improve their parallel programming skills. He expressed his hope that over the next month, all participants would actively engage in the summer school, learn together, and make progress in their knowledge and skills.

The director of EduCoder, a partner of the summer school, Mr. Gang Yin, gave a speech expressing his delight in participating in the summer school's workshop. He mentioned that the EduCoder can ensure that everyone has access to a real programming environment and experimental conditions. The EduCoder believes that in today's era of big data and artificial intelligence, parallel programming skills are vital, and he hoped that this summer school's workshop would enhance everyone's parallel programming abilities.

Finally, Professor Feng Lu introduced the learning objectives, course schedule, and teaching staff of the summer school. She stated that in this hands-on workshop, the teaching would focus on how to use OpenMP and MPI to implement programming and performance optimization for shared and distributed parallel computing systems. She hoped that students, based on mastering the basic programming methods, would have a deeper understanding of parallel computing and optimization concepts through a series of simple parallel programming experiments.

The "HUST - University of Sydney Summer School · Parallel Programming Hands-on Workshop" aims to implement the spirit of accelerating and expanding the opening up of education, promote the construction of the "Double First-Class" universities, introduce world-class teaching resources, expand the international academic vision of our university students, and increase the influence of HUST and the School. The summer school is free for students from universities across the country, and the course registration has been enthusiastic, with more than 200 students submitting applications. After selection, over 100 students from different schools and majors across the country, including Nanyang Technological University, University of Macau, Nanjing University, and HUST, became the students of "HUST - University of Sydney Summer School · Parallel Programming Hands-on Workshop".
