Research Group

Name of Research Group: data storage system and technology

Information Storage and Optical Display Division, Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO) operated by the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is also the Education Ministry’s key laboratory of Information Storage System and the Engineering Research Center for Data Storage Systems and Technology. We have over 50 faculty members including 2 Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professors, 2 National Science Foundation For Outstanding Young Scholars winners, 1 National High-Level Talent Special Support Plan “Youth Science and technology innovation leader2 Chutian Scholars, and 2 “Talent of the New Century” scholars. Together with over 300 Ph.D. and MS students, our lab is the largest and the first class research institution and graduate training base in the area of information storage in China.

With over 40 years of history in data storage research since 1974, our lab is the nation’s key research and educational center in system and architecture area and is listed as “211”, “985”, and “Double First-Class” major institute in the subject area of computer architecture.

Our laboratory’s main research directions include but not limited to:

(1) Non-volatile memory technology. Including PCM, new mechanism of RRAM, Non-Volatile Memory architecture, Persistent Memory management and file system, Processing in Memory based on a memristor, etc.

(2) Disk array technology. Storage channel interface technology, data layout algorithm, data fault tolerance technology, data recovery and reconstruction algorithm, performance optimization technology and energy saving technology, etc. We also independently developed universal solid-state disk array and portable disk array prototype systems.

(3) Mass storage system and technology. We study high availability, high performance, large capacity, self-organizing parallel storage technology, object storage system, distributed storage technology, etc. and independently developed Massive Distributed Object Storage System (CapFS).

(4) Cloud storage and QoS technology. Including storage virtualization, data deduplication, data backup, disaster recovery, and long-term data protection, etc.

(5) Solid state storage technology. Including PCM, solid-state storage technology based on flash fusion, high speed solid-state disk technology, etc. We independently developed solid-state disk prototype.

(6) Storage applications. Storage system architecture and storage software in complex network environment, including K-V storage, storage management, storage virtualization, and storage service software, etc.

Recent accomplishments of our lab include winning over 40 research contracts and grants such as 973, 863, NSFC Key projects, National Science Foundation, National Defense Pre-research Projects, etc. The lab has produced many high quality graduate students including 3 Huawei “TopMinds” and some of them received national/CIE excellent doctor awards, the finalist of international storage challenge. We have published over 600 papers and filed over 200 patents.

We have a very comprehensive experimental environment including a petabyte-level test bed for networked storage research, high density memory chips, and optical storage, etc. We also have world class testing equipment and development tools.

Our goal is to build a first class storage laboratory around the world, produce significant research results and cultivate a large number of talents in the area of information storage science and technology.
