On December 25, Harbin Engineering University (HEU) held a conference to review and further advance the implementation of its "Globalization Development Strategic Action Plan (2024–2026)," marking the one-year anniversary since the plan's release. Vice President YU Zhiwen attended the event and delivered the keynote address.
In his speech, YU Zhiwen emphasized that internationalization plays a pivotal role in driving the integrated development of education, research, and talent cultivation. He stressed that for HEU to become a distinctive, world-class institution, it must remain committed to openness, actively integrate global resources, align itself with global development trends, and lead in cutting-edge sectors of the international industry. This approach will enable the university to build unmatched international competitiveness and influence.
YU Zhiwen outlined three key directives for advancing the university's globalization strategy:
1. Embrace Challenges with Innovation and Collaboration.
The university must take a bold and proactive approach, identifying untapped potential and fostering innovation in international partnerships. In response to evolving dynamics in domestic and global exchanges, it is crucial to adopt creative methods and prioritize outcomes, ensuring the development of meaningful, high-impact collaborations.
2. Pursue Long-Term Goals with Strategic Focus.
Achieving success requires sustained commitment and strategic focus. HEU must stay dedicated to its long-term objectives, ensuring that its collaborative efforts are both well-directed and effective. By enhancing its capabilities and building trust with global partners, the university can strengthen its international reputation and partnerships.
3. Develop Signature Initiatives for Visible Impact.
The university should concentrate on creating signature international programs and delivering measurable, high-impact results. By aligning these initiatives with both industry needs and academic priorities, HEU aims to establish platforms for international exchange and academic collaboration, positioning itself as a leader in the global academic community.
During the conference, the Director of the International Office, representing the Globalization Working Group, presented a comprehensive report on the initiatives and achievements of the first year of the strategic action plan. The report also outlined proposed strategies for the next phase of implementation.
The conference also recognized and honored individuals and teams who made outstanding contributions to HEU’s globalization efforts. Awards were given to "Model Units," "Outstanding Teams," and "Distinguished Individuals," with several recipients sharing their experiences and best practices during the event.
