From October 28 to 31, 2024, Finnish President Alexander Stubb visited China for a state visit. On the morning of October 29, President Stubb attended the launch ceremony of the collaboration between Tsinghua University in Beijing and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, which highlighted the importance of Metropolia University within Finland's education system. At the same time, Liikka Nutilainen, a senior economist at the Finnish central bank, pointed out the broad potential for cooperation between China and Finland in high-tech fields, artificial intelligence, 5G, green transformation, and aging services.
Against this backdrop, on November 5, 2024, Professor An Ning from our university invited Dr. Päivi Haho and Dr. Pirjo Vesa from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences to deliver a special lecture on Finland's progress in smart elderly care as part of the Smart Elderly Care course at Hefei University of Technology, Tunxi Road campus. This teaching activity aimed to further enhance our university's communication and collaboration with international institutions in the field of smart elderly care and provide undergraduates with a deeper understanding of Finland's innovative developments in this area.
In the lecture, Dr. Päivi Haho introduced the Evondos automated medication dispensing system and the Suvanto Care remote safety monitoring system, demonstrating how these smart elderly care products ensure medication safety and home care for the elderly. Dr. Pirjo Vesa then explained the Vivaco Care intelligent nursing system and the MariCare intelligent detection system, which enable fall prevention, behavior monitoring, and 24/7 safety alarms, significantly improving the quality of elderly care services. Through practical case studies, students learned how advanced technologies, such as smart robots, health monitoring sensors, and non-wearable detection systems, can enhance the independence and safety of elderly individuals. The students also actively engaged in discussions with the two professors about their experiences with the Evondos system and the future development of smart elderly care.
This teaching activity not only deepened students' understanding of Finland's smart elderly care technologies but also furthered the collaboration between our university and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in the field of elderly care education. Since 2018, Hefei University of Technology's Smart Elderly Care course has provided high-quality teaching services to over 2,000 undergraduates. Through this cooperation, the course has expanded its impact and is now also serving students at the University of Eastern Finland and Anhui Medical School.
