India Culture Week was organised by the Consulate jointly with Guangzhou Vocational College of Science and Technology from Oct. 23-25, 2012 in the college premises. The event showcased Indian photography exhibition by famous Chinese artist Shirley Wong, Indian Food festival, lectures on Indian economy and culture and screening of popular Hindi movies.
The opening ceremony of the Indian photography exhibition entitled ‘Incredible India’ was held on October 23. The event was inaugurated by our Consul General Shri Indra Mani Pandey. A large number of academics, people related with art, students and teachers were present in the ceremony. Shirley Wong travelled to various parts of India in last three years and has tried to depict Indian Cultural Heritage through her photograph. After the inauguration, the Consul General also declared open Indian Food Festival. It was an effort to introduce teachers and students of the college and nearby colleges, variety and specialties of Indian cuisine. The festival lasted for all three days and large number of people had a taste of Indian food.
The grand event of the evening on October 23 was the cultural programme showcasing various Indian dances and some Chinese folk music. The gala event started with the speech by the College President and our Consul General. During the speech, Consul General highlighted the importance of students working as bridge between two cultures in order to foster closer cultural people to people contact. He also said that the aim of the festival was to introduce different facets of India to the students of the college so that there will be better understanding of Indian culture among youth in China. The cultural evening had performances by Anuradha Sharma, dance teacher at Indian Culture Centre, Embassy of India, Beijing. There were also Indian dances by Chinese students of Guangdong School of Dance in Guangzhou, besides, folk music and traditional Tibetan songs by professional Chinese artists. More than 5000 audience witnessed the cultural event.
On October 24, Dr. Y.S. Alone, visiting Professor from JNU, New Delhi to Shenzhen University, gave a lecture on ‘Glimpses of Indian Culture’. Around 200 students, teachers and officials listened to the lecture with avid interest followed by a large number of questions on Indian Culture, history and iconography. Another lecture was presented by our Consul Sandeep Kumar Bayyapu on Indian Economy. A large number of students, teachers and officials attended and showed lot of interest in understanding Indian Economy.
