About Us

The Graduate School is a major functional body of Fujian Medical University in academic degree and postgraduate education, responsible for the implementation of national policies and regulations in degree-awarding and postgraduate education, and specifically, the enrollment, teaching and training of the postgraduates and the degree-awarding in this university. The organizational setting includes the Graduate School (Tel 0591-22862112) and the School CPC Committee (Tel 0591-22862035), under which are the School Office (Tel 0591-22862992), the Postgraduate Enrollment and Administration Branch (Tel 0591-22862107) and the Training and Degree Administration Branch (Tel 0591-22862663). Meanwhile, there are 3 permanent bodies of the university, that is, the Postgraduate Enrollment Office, the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee Office and the Center for Post-Doctoral Studies Administration. There is currently 1 school dean, 1 secretary of the school CPC committee and assistant dean, 2 assistant deans, 5 principal and senior staff members, and 6 staff members and students' counsellors .

The main functions of the Graduate School and the School CPC Committee lie in organizing the reform of postgraduate education in the whole university, conducting the research in academic degree and postgraduate education, taking part in the university’s making decisions on postgraduate education development. Under the guidance of the state plan and taking into consideration the development in science and technology, the social demand and some other possible conditions, the school and its CPC committee are responsible for the making of the mid-term, long-term and annual enrollment plans of postgraduate education, and the implementation of those plans with approval from the university. In order to guarantee the quality of postgraduate education, they formulate and enforce the rules and regulations on academic degree and postgraduate education, examine and evaluate the actual implementing situations and the practical work of postgraduate education and degree awarding. The vocational guidance and the management of the ideological and political education of the postgraduates are their duties. They also shoulder the responsibility of the university's subject construction and taking charge of the planning and declaration work of master programs and doctoral programs. They cooperate with the other schools (and hospitals) to improve the construction and management of the master and doctoral programs, and organize the selection and assessment of all the doctoral and master supervisors in respective subjects.

At present, there are 22 third-level doctoral degree conferring institutions, 59 third-level master's degree conferring institutions, 2 master's degree programs (Clinical Medicine and Stomatology), 2 centers for postdoctoral studies (one for Clinical Medicine and the other for Preclinical Medicine), 4 provincial excellent postgraduate courses (Medical Molecular Biology, Senior Pathology, Neurology and Pharmacology), and 7 provincial postgraduate education innovation bases ( for Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, Pharmacy, Preclinical Medicine, Otorhinolaryngology and Stomatology respectively). There are in total 65 Doctoral Supervisors and 455 Master Supervisors in our school. Every year, we enroll more than 60 doctoral candidates, over 600 master's degree candidates (including those of professional degrees), and 240 seven-year-program students of clinical medicine. Currently, there are 2300 full-time postgraduates (including doctoral candidates, master's degree candidates and seven-year-program students in their sixth or seventh academic year) and more than 300 part-time postgraduates, distributed in the 42 postgraduate education institutions in various parts of Fujian Province. Meanwhile, we actively carry out non-degree postgraduate education, and run classes of different disciplines for advanced studies of postgraduate curricula.

The academic degree and postgraduate education of the school pays extreme importance to education quality, targets at talents cultivation, regulates the management system for postgraduate education step by step, strengthens the building of the supervisor team, and explores as well as improves the cultivation of creative talents. We are enhancing the joint cultivation program with foreign countries, selecting and sending some outstanding doctoral and master's degree candidates to the key laboratories both at home and abroad to conduct different subject studies. Since 2000, we have won 26 Fujian Provincial Excellent Doctoral Thesis Awards, including 6 first prizes, 9 second prizes and 11 third prizes. Inhibition of Novobiocin on Proliferation of Bcr-Abl-Positive Human Leukemia Cells Involves Disruption Chaperon Function of Hsp90, written by the pharmacologist in our school, Dr. Wu Li-xian (Xu Jian-hua as the supervisor), was nominated as one of the 100 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations in 2009.

According to the social demand for high-level talents, the Graduate School works out the mid-term and long-term plans for the academic degree and postgraduate education of Fujian Medical University, draws a blueprint for the 12th Five-Year Plan, and opens up a new prospect for the academic degree and postgraduate education, with the aim to promote the construction of the university and the development of the Economic Zone on the West Coast of the Taiwan Straits, and to cultivate and bring up more outstanding and creative medical talents for the development of the national medicine and healthcare undertaking.
