1. The level of the basic and clinical research on heart, cardiopulmonary, and lung transplantation is advanced in China, with 144 successful cases of clinical heart transplantation which have won 13 first places in China, 5 cases of cardiopulmonary combined transplantation and 3 cases of lung transplantation. With all these accomplishments, our institute becomes one of the first group of hospitals in China which are approved to carry out lung transplantation operations by the Ministry of Health, and undoubtedly, our institute is the only one with honor to carry out lung transplantation in Fujian Province. The heart transplantation operation has won one second prize of Science & Technology Progress Award of Fujian Province and one special prize of Special Award of the Department of Public Health. In regard to basic research, our institute has carried out a series of researches on the preservation of donors’ organs, the precaution against damage caused by re-perfusion and remote vasculopathy. The members of the institute have published more than 60 articles including 1 in SCI, 37 in the catena-journal of Chinese Medical Association, and 1 of these articles has won one third prize of Science & Technology Progress Award of Fujian Province.
2. In the clinical and basic researches of delicate congenital heart disease, our institute has carried out difficult and delicate clinical surgeries on congenital heart disease including switch operation for the transposition of the great arteries, Nikaidoh operation for double-outlet right ventricle or for transposition of the great arteries with left ventricular outflow tract stenosis, Rastelli operation for artificial graft vessels, the correction of interrupted aortic arch and total pulmonary artery connection. The level of these operations is among the most advanced in China. Our institute also carried out basic research such as the protection of immature muocardium which has won a second prize of Science & Technology Progress Award of Fujian Province.
3. The application of hybrid operation in cardiothoracic surgery, especially in aortic and congenital heart disease surgery, has produced marked effect. The application of aortic surgery and stent-grafting hybrid surgeries for type I dissecting aneurysm have achieved remarkable success, especially when using those branched stents with independent property right, which have been applied for a patent. The hybrid technique of balloon dilation for complex congenital pulmonary atresia as well as the sealing technique for infantile interventricular septal defect has reached a high level in Fujian Province. We have published 2 articles in SCI.
4. Treatment of severe coronary disease is of high successful rate. Many critically-ill patients have been saved. The members of our institute have published 8 relevant articles and won one second prize of Science & Technology Progress Award of Fujian Province.
5. In lung surgery: in addition to a great number of common operations on lung cancer, our institute, as the first one in 1980s, has carried out surgeries on trachea and bronchus as well as carina shaping operations to cure lung cancer and delicate severe trauma of trachea and bronchus. There are nearly a hundred successful cases. Our institute is the first one to carry out such surgeries with the largest number of successful cases.
6. In esophageal surgery: our institute is the first to carry out tri-incision radical correction of esophageal cancer in Fujian Province, and there are nearly one thousand cases; our institute was the first to carry out colon interposition in 1950s in China with good effects on a great number of esophageal cancer cases after gastrectomy.
7. In video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and video-assisted mediastinoscope surgery: the minimally invasive thoracoscopic surgery creates small wound with little hurt and pain, and produces fine cosmetic outcome. It is applied to the treatment of over 20 diseases of lung, esophagus, mediastinum and thoracic trauma. The 13 surgical approaches are as follows: thoracoscopic lobectomy of lung, biopsy of wedge-shape excision of lung, diagnosis of diffuse lung diseases, lung volume reduction, funnel chest minimally invasive rectification, excision of mediastinal tumor, palmar hyperhidrosis, pericardial effusion fenestration and the treatment of chest trauma, pulmonary bulla and pneumothorax; esophagectomy under mediastinoscope, etc.. The application of mediastinoscope to various mediastinum diseases and the preoperative periodization of lung cancer have reached a high level in Fujian Province. It is the earliest application with the largest number of cases.
In recent years, the members of institute have published 5 articles in SCI, and more than 400 articles on national and provincial periodicals. Members of the institute have worked as chief editors of 5 monographs and editors of 7 monographs. The institute has 2 patents, and has won 1 prize of Achievement Award of The National Science Conference, 15 prizes of Science & Technology Achievement Award of Fujian Province, 5 prizes of Medical and Health Technology Achievement Award and 1 prize of the 8th Five-Year Plan Science & Technology Award. The institute has assumed over 20 provincial scientific research programs and the teaching of undergraduates, postgraduates and PhD candidates of Fujian Medical University. The institute has held national and provincial conferences and further learning classes many times.
