University of Nottingham Professor Paul Roberts Delivered Courses on “Foundation of English Criminal Evidence and the Presumption of Innocence”

Invited by the "2011 Plan" China Collaborative Innovation Center of Judicial Civilization(CICJC, China), the “111 plan” Base for Evidence Science Innovation and Talent Recruitment, Professor Paul Roberts from the University of Nottingham School of Law (UK), as a member of the Advisory Committee of Foreign Experts in Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science, CUPL, and also an overseas key member of the “111 Plan” Base for Evidence Science Innovation and Talent Recruitment, successfully delivered an interesting and thought-provoking lecture on topic of “Foundation of English Criminal Evidence and the Presumption of Innocence” for CUPL graduate students. This course started on 5 May 2019 for 8 days.

Around the topic "Foundation of the Evidence Law and the Presumption of Innocence", Professor Paul Roberts conducted eight lectures, from the comparison of the legal system between the Anglo-American legal system and the civil law system to the basic theory interpretation of evidence law, and then to the principle of presumption of innocence in the trial practice in the United Kingdom, etc.

Professor Paul's lectures are full of energy and passion. He demonstrates the open and free teaching methods with his unique charm, which has aroused the students' positive thinking and won the praise of the students, especially their obsession with academics, which affects the desire of students for the knowledge about the evidence law. Before class, he carefully prepared the reading materials related to each lesson; at class, he used cases to analyze the macro principles one by one, stripping and twitching, and making each knowledge point very clear; after class, He invited students to talk, telling them his learning experiences, motivating students, telling students that education can change their destiny. Professor Paul always encourages students to express their academic ideas boldly and encourages students to conduct academic dialogues with evidence law.

This lecture was very helpful for students to master the knowledge of the British evidence law. More importantly, it opens a window for Chinese students to understand the knowledge of foreign evidence law and provides a platform for Chinese student where can communicate with foreign evidence law researcher.

Professor Paul's lecture was not only fully supported by the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science of CUPL but also welcomed by the majority of students. This course not only attracts Ph.D. and master students who majored the judicial civilization and evidence law of our institute but also attracts students from other colleges such as the Law School of Criminal Justice to attend classes. The CUPL alumni, teachers from other universities, police, lawyers, and foreign students also came to attend. The influence of the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science, CUPL, has further expanded.
