Signing of the MOU on Jointly Establishing an "International Joint 

Laboratory for Smart Cities" Between CUMT 

and Pavol Jozef Šafárik University


The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between our university and Pavol Jozef Šafárik University took place on the morning of December 13, local time, in Košice, Slovakia. The Deputy Minister of Education of China, Mr. Wu Yan, attended the ceremony and delivered a speech.

Mr. Wu Yan, on behalf of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, extended warm congratulations on the signing of the MoU between the two universities and expressed high praise for their sincere cooperation. He noted that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Slovakia. In early November, when President Xi Jinping met with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was in China for an official visit, both sides decided to elevate Sino-Slovak relations to a strategic partnership. China and Slovakia each have their own strengths and characteristics in the field of science and technology. The establishment of the "Smart City" International Joint Laboratory represents an excellent opportunity for deeper collaboration between the two countries in the realm of technology. It also serves as a vivid example of the implementation of the strategic partnership.

He emphasized that the signing of this MoU, with a focus on establishing an international joint laboratory, will be of great significance for promoting research collaboration in the key disciplines of China University of Mining and Technology and Pavol Jozef Šafárik University, as well as for the joint cultivation of high-level, outstanding talents. He expressed his hope that the two universities would enhance their cooperation, translating the political, economic, and technological relationships between China and Slovakia into projects that embody "state-to-state exchanges and people-to-people bonds." This would enable the youth of both countries to engage in brotherly exchanges and learning, thereby fostering a steady and long-term development of bilateral relations.

CUMT President Zhao Hongwei and President Daniel Pella of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University signed the MoU. President Zhao expressed gratitude on behalf of the university to the Ministry of Education and the Chinese Embassy in Slovakia for their long-term concern and support for the development of CUMT. He stated that CUMT will work hand in hand with Pavol Jozef Šafárik University to make greater contributions to promoting educational and cultural exchanges between China and Slovakia and enhancing the friendship between the two peoples. President Daniel Pella warmly welcomed the delegation on behalf of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University. He hopes to open a new chapter of comprehensive cooperation between the two universities through this signing.

The signing ceremony was attended by H.E. Cai Ge, the Chinese Ambassador to Slovakia; Slavka Tomášiková, Vice-Rector of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University; and officials from various departments of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, including the Department of Vocational and Adult Education, the Department of Science, Technology, and Informationization, and the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges. Also present were CUMT Vice-President Bian Zhengfu and heads of relevant departments.

This MoU on the construction of an "International Joint Laboratory for Smart Cities." will concentrate on major scientific challenges related to the sensing, computing, and application aspects of smart cities. It aims to address significant industrial demands for global smart city construction and innovative applications. By leveraging interdisciplinary collaboration as its foundation and driving forward with technological innovation, the partnership seeks to achieve breakthroughs in scientific research and application technology in areas such as collaborative sensing for smart cities. The joint laboratory is expected to facilitate advancements in urban digital transformation and the intelligent development of cities.
