Scholar in BIT, Prof. Jun Yang, Expert in explosion

"Now ready to detonate, last a minute!"

"Counting the number of people, everyone and the car move to outside!"

"5, 4, 3, 2, 1, start!"

In a single shot, the success or failure of the explosion allows ordinary people to shake or fear at the blasting scene, but it is the daily life of the blaster. In the BIT, there are such an extraordinary group of scholars and students who are intensively engaged in the academic study and devoted themselves to study for the art of explosion. They are the blasters of the BIT.

Professor Jun Yang at the school of Mechatronical Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology, and the State Bureau of Explosion Engineering and Security Technology in the SKLEST, is an outstanding representative of the blaster at BIT. On October 3rd, CCTV's series of documentary "China Captain" Episode 3 "Blasting Expert" described the story of China's "Basting Captain" Yang Jun.

He led the team to constantly overcome difficulties, made one after another "difficult moves" and wrote a wonderful chapter in Chinese blasting.

On June 29, 2016, the blasting site of the thermal power plant in the western suburbs of Tangshan was somewhat stressful.

In the face of a 210-meter ultra-high chimney that will be demolished by demolition, Prof. Yang’s team proposes a new “co-directional folding” blasting scheme and the precise calculation of the upper and lower blasting incision delays can be achieved. Although the scheme has been repeatedly demonstrated and simulated, everyone holds their breath before everything is settled. If there is an accident, equipment cost tens of millions of yuan in the plant will be damaged.

The folding blasting method is the most commonly used demolition demolition method for ultra-high buildings, but it has strict requirements for the empty space on the ground. The ultra-high chimneys to be demolished are only 10 meters away from the nearby factory building. This complex and harsh environment make "dismantling the chimney" extremely difficult, or maybe impossible.

To ignite a blasting fuse, it must be a solid scientific argument. After repeated explorations on the site, Prof. Yang proposed a bold explosion plan of “co-folding”. Other experts have different opinions and they do not agree with our proposal. They questioned on how to determine the delay time between the upper and lower explosive incisions. Similar chimney blast collapsion is not available in practical applications. It was only in textbooks, thus everyone thought we cannot do it. But Prof. Yang's plan is not awkward. According to the scientific simulation, the delay time is roughly 2.5 to 3 seconds, which is enough to ensure that the chimney collapses in the same direction and folds in the same direction. This confidence comes from the art of science.

Blasting is a science that requires courage and carefulness. Any carelessness can lead disastrous consequences. In addition to undergoing scientific argumentation, we must also face various factors that cannot be controlled. Jun Yang described this way: "Blasting often includes unexpected factors. As a professional, you must be able to stand up. When you are not prepared enough, you cannot ignite. If you cannot do this, then it is very possible to cause catastrophic damage."

On the day of blasting of the ultra-high chimney, the team encountered thunderstorms that introduced unknown security risks. Prof. Yang and its team members wait for 3 hours and finally seized the time window of the rain stop to calmly ignite. After the intensive rang, the large chimney, which is as high as 210 meters and has strong anti-seismic capabilities, has collapsed as expected. The blasting has been successful. On-site industry experts praised the blast: “The blasting at the 110 meter is accurate and correct.”

As the first national defense university in China, Beijing Institute of Technology has always maintained obvious research advantages in the field of explosion in China. The profound academic foundation provides a strong support for the school's scientific research in the field of blasting engineering. It is precisely under the unremitting efforts of Prof. Yang and other scholars that the research of BEI Science and Technology in blasting disciplines has continued to deepen, and engineering application have continued to emerge, enjoying a high reputation in the blasting industry in China and the World Blasting community.

In connection with the blasting, Jun Yang said that it was also a coincidence. "I didn't know this area as a high school student at that time. When I was in college, I thought I should go to learn a art, but at that time we were all passively assigned and depend on your score."

As a college student in 1977, Jun Yang did not embark on the artistic road he had wished for, but now he feels the blast as an “art” that “snaps away”.

Jun Yang deeply infuriated his students with the continuous exploration of blasting science. “Mr. Yang always requires us to do tens of simulation calculations, and then repeat our arguments. If it is inappropriate, it will be pushed over and start again.” In addition, Prof. Yang is also a “tide” in the eyes of students. He “integrated” the explosion on the popular mobile phone app. “There are many handbook specifications for blasting, and in some cases there is no way to always bring the book, so when confronted with some disputes, everyone will rely on their own memories. This often leads to mistakes.” Based on this, Prof. Yang has developed a technology to provide knowledge on blasting by referring to mobile phones, "We feel that everyone now has mobile phones, and that the functions of mobile phones are very powerful. People in other industries already have such things, so we should also have one!"

"In addition to studying demolition blasting, my research direction is rock blasting theory simulation calculation and blasting safety technology. In my opinion, scientific blasting design and advanced digital simulation technology can make seemingly thrilling blasting in full control. " Jun Yang said," However, this is only part of my job." He deeply knows that only by doing a good job of talent cultivation and discipline construction will be the continuation of the unceasing splendor of the "art."

Until today, the theoretical model and simulation technology of rock blasting damage presided by Yang Jun are leading in China. The numerical simulation of the demolition blasting process of buildings and structures has attracted international attention and has been successfully applied in the design of multiple blasting demolition projects. He has also successively directed 20 doctoral students and 23 master students, published more than 180 academic papers, published 6 monographs such as "The Numerical Simulation of Demolition of Building Structures (Science Press)" and won the Ministry of Education and the Arm Industry. Ministry of Science and Technology Progress Award, Beijing Institute of Technology and China Blast Association Science and Technology Progress Award and other honors.

An 0.8 M kw power plant, which connects the centers of the three major power systems in Lanzhou, Hexi Corridor and Qinghai, is an important part of the main power grid in the northwest. The normal operation of the power plant unit and the old plant that needs to be dismantled in the power plant. The distance between the two is only 24 meters; in an abandoned gold mine in the surrounding areas of Beijing, due to the repeated prohibition of frequent mining operations and frequent accidents, fundamentally eliminating the need for thorough mining to destroy gold mining, but the huge hollow inside the gold mine, lurking The danger of landslides; the seismic effects of the blasting of Heishan Iron Mine in Chengde and the explosion at the stope of the Yuanbaoshan open-pit coal mine may have an impact on the life and production of neighboring residents... The problem Prof. Yang is trying to solve is such a thorny task. "Mr. Yang likes to do tasks that are technically difficult. When there are new practical problems in engineering, Mr. Yang thinks it is time for us to play a role," said Dr. Li Shunbo, manager of Beijing Industry Development (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd.

"Blasting is not just about blowing up an abandoned building. The development of the country and society needs old and new replacements. It is between the cycles that we have national construction and social development. Therefore, blasting should be understood as development. An important means of construction has a special role and significance.” Prof. Yang understood the significance of blasting from the perspective of national social development. Blasting does not mean destruction, but a new beginning, development of metabolism, and ultimately the catalysis of blasting. After a loud noise, the ruins will reshape new buildings and the land will have new possibilities.

Jun Yang, 57 years old, has been engaged in blasting research for more than 30 years. He compares himself to an "eraser" and uses wisdom and hard work to erase old ones, creating new possibilities one after another. At the Beijing University of Science and Technology, there are a large number of people like Prof. Yang. In their own fields, they rigorously pursue academic studies, work hard, and overcome difficulties, creating results that are down-to-earth and effective, and practice NorthTech’s service to the country. Major demand, aiming at the cutting-edge development concept of the world's science and technology, building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, building bricks and mortar, and struggling to compose a magnificent chapter in building a socialist modernized country!
